Triage and Evaluation Center (TEC)

The Triage and Evaluation Center (TEC) is the gateway to all of the inpatient and outpatient services offered by the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute. Located on the Polyclinic Campus in Harrisburg and open 24/7, the TEC is where you or a loved one will be initially assessed.

During this assessment, our qualified team:

• Will gather pertinent information from you, including medical and psychiatric history and a description of your current issues
• Will search the range of programs throughout PPI for the one that best meet your specific needs
• Will explain the program and services - answering all of your questions
• Will walk you through the admissions process, including verifying insurance benefits
• Can tell you about alternate funding sources that may fit you financial situation

During the assessment, our staff will ask you about the issues you are currently having as well as questions about your past medical and psychiatric history. Family members or friends accompanying you will also be asked questions. The assessment takes about an hour but could go longer depending on the complexity of your case.

This assessment is not a psychiatric evaluation. Rather, it is to determine whether you need to be hospitalized or receive some other type of service. Once the assessment is complete, our staff will discuss the results with you and then make a determination about what services you require.

For everyone’s safety, TEC is a locked facility that does not allow outside items to be brought in, such as purses, packages, cigarettes, lighters, etc. Please also leave all valuables at home.
